About Indigenous Women Council
The Indigenous Women Council (IWC) is a national movement that unites indigenous women leaders, grassroots women groups, and women-led organizations working to advance the rights and wellbeing of indigenous women and girls in Kenya. For nearly a decade, the Council has served as a platform for indigenous women to organize, advocate, and influence policies affecting their communities. In 2024, IWC achieved a significant milestone by registering as an independent entity, strengthening its institutional structure and expanding its ability to serve indigenous women across Kenya.
Championing Indigenous Women's Rights
The Indigenous Women Council began as a grassroots initiative by indigenous women leaders who recognized the need for a unified platform to advocate for the rights of indigenous women and girls. Over time, the movement expanded across counties in northern Kenya as more women leaders and organizations joined. Through collaboration and advocacy, the Council grew into a strong network representing indigenous women from pastoralist communities. Today, IWC continues to build a powerful movement of women leaders who are transforming their communities.
